Geothermie Unterhaching case study: supplying both heat and electricity from geothermics to a municipality

Work has been going on in Germany for more than twenty years on the use of geothermal power plants. Besides providing heat to private households through geothermal collectors or large-scale cogeneration plants, as is the case in Erding and Waren, a power generation plant also went into operation for the first time in 2003, supplementing the existing district heat supply system in Neustadt-Glewe in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Geothermal power plant in Mecklenburg-Forepommerania, Germany

Only a few regions in Germany have potential for economically harnessing geothermal power. The earth's temperature rarely rises above 130°C, even at depths of several thousand metres. Deep geothermal power is still on the starting blocks in Germany, while thermal pumping stations using geothermal water sources at or near the surface or in the top layers of the earth - even at relatively low water temperatures - have been successfully used for providing hot water and heating mainly in private households for thirty years.
